Widows Mite 7.0: Vocational Skills empowerment
In a sustained demonstration of commitment to the families of Fallen Heroes of the Nigeria Police Force, the United States-based charity organization, Kedrick Scribner Foundation, is preparing to host the Widow’s Mite 7.0 in Lagos, Nigeria, scheduled for February 2026. The seventh edition of the Foundation’s flagship outreach programme will focus on scholarships for orphans, empowerment for widows and orphans at the Kedrick Scribner Vocational Center, and graduation of students who have completed vocational training programs. In addition, meals will be provided for all attendees, ensuring the inclusivity and success of the programme.
Widow’s Mite 7.0 continues the legacy established by previous editions of the initiative. The Widow’s Mite 1.0 programme provided essential food items and household supplies to over 80 widows, while feeding hundreds of attendees during the accompanying community church service. Building on this, Widow’s Mite 2.0 expanded to a multi-day programme featuring medical outreach, free health insurance for 180 widows, and fully funded university scholarships for children of widows, impacting more than 2,000 participants during the event.
The Widow’s Mite 3.0 edition marked the inauguration of the Kedrick Scribner Vocational Center, a major milestone in the Foundation’s empowerment agenda. The center provides vocational training in sewing and Information and Communications Technology (ICT) for widows and orphans, with access to tools such as sewing machines and computer resources to equip beneficiaries for income-generating activities. This initiative introduced structured training programmes, including six-month sewing courses and three-month ICT courses, designed to enhance the employability and economic independence of participants.
Subsequent editions, including Widow’s Mite 4.0, Widow’s Mite 5.0, and Widow’s Mite 6.0, reinforced these interventions. They continued providing vocational training, educational support, and community feeding programmes, while expanding scholarship opportunities for orphans. These editions also ensured continued engagement with widows and orphans across Lagos State, reinforcing sustainable empowerment and economic independence as core objectives of the programme.
Building on this foundation, Widow’s Mite 7.0 will award scholarships to deserving orphans to support their educational pursuits, including tuition, books, and school materials. The programme will also provide ongoing empowerment training for widows and orphans at the Vocational Center, equipping them with practical skills in sewing, dressmaking, traditional wear creation, and ICT. Graduating students from previous vocational programs will be celebrated during the event, marking their successful completion of training and readiness to contribute economically to their families and communities.
The vocational programs offered through the Kedrick Scribner Vocational Center are designed to be comprehensive and practical. The sewing course covers pattern cutting, dressmaking, and traditional attire construction, allowing participants to produce garments for sale. ICT training includes beginner to advanced computer application courses, ensuring that beneficiaries can leverage technology for personal and professional development.
Widow’s Mite 7.0 also reinforces the Foundation’s broader mission of community support. Meals will be provided for all attendees, ensuring the inclusivity of the event and reinforcing the Foundation’s commitment to addressing immediate needs alongside long-term empowerment.
The Kedrick Scribner Foundation emphasizes that structured, deliberate, and sustainable support systems are essential for ensuring that widows and orphans achieve self-sufficiency and economic independence. The Foundation continues to advocate for and provide resources necessary for families to live sustainably, including scholarships, vocational tools, and training programs.
The Foundation also continues to call on government agencies, corporate organizations, faith-based institutions, and private individuals to collaborate in supporting widows and orphans, highlighting the importance of community participation in creating long-term impact.
Widow’s Mite 7.0 thus represents a continued commitment to the education, empowerment, and economic development of the families of fallen heroes. By awarding scholarships, providing vocational training, and celebrating graduates of its programs, the Foundation ensures that widows and orphans are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities necessary to build sustainable futures.
This seventh edition consolidates the lessons, successes, and frameworks established by all previous Widow’s Mite events, ensuring that the Kedrick Scribner Foundation continues to be a driving force in uplifting vulnerable families of Nigeria’s fallen police officers, while setting a benchmark for structured, long-term humanitarian intervention in the country.
