Joy, Hope, and Fresh Starts: Kedrick Scribner Foundation’s Back-to-School Event Empowers Baltimore Families
Baltimore, MD — Laughter, music, and the hum of clippers filled the air as the Kedrick Scribner Foundation, Inc. hosted its annual Back-to-School Free Haircuts and Bookbag Giveaway on Sunday, August 24, 2025, at the Kedrick Scribner Vocational Center (Baltimore), 2900 Taylor Avenue, Parkville, MD 21234.
This year’s event was nothing short of remarkable—serving over 68 children with free professional haircuts and 58 students registered for school supplies, each walking away with a brand-new Kedrick Scribner Foundation bookbag filled to the brim with notebooks, pens, pencils, and more.
For many families in attendance, the day was more than just an event—it was a celebration of community, dignity, and hope.
A Day of Giving, A Day of Joy
From the opening beats spun by DJ DeWayne to the mouthwatering smells drifting from Jerome Moore’s Catering grill trailer, the atmosphere was vibrant and welcoming. Children danced joyfully, parents shared smiles of relief, and neighbors embraced one another in unity.
The menu—hamburgers, hotdogs, baked beans, corn on the cob, chips, soda, and juice—ensured no child went hungry. Many parents were visibly moved as they saw their children receive not only supplies, but also encouragement and love.
“It’s amazing. There’s plenty of food, plenty of activities, free haircuts, and so many great resources,” said Kim Bates, Family Support Worker II with the Maryland Department of Human Services. “People need help during this season, and this is a blessing. I’ll definitely be back with more families next year.”
Community Voices of Gratitude
The event drew families from across Baltimore and beyond. Anika Patterson, originally from Baltimore but now living in Pennsylvania, heard about the event from Derryck Fletcher, Gospel Grace Host on WEAA 88.9 FM and drove down with her children.
“I came for the haircuts and school supplies, but stayed for the atmosphere,” she shared. “The music, the food, the people—it’s a beautiful community event. We’ll be back next year.”
Local leaders also praised the Foundation’s work. Elder Maureen Butler, Director of Outreach at The Church of the Redeemed of the Lord, said:
“Kedrick is about good work. The Kedrick Scribner Foundation is doing so much for our community, and I’m excited about the upcoming Barbershop Wrap program. It’s more than haircuts; it’s about building men, mentoring boys, and uplifting lives.”
Volunteers and Partners Making a Difference
Much of the day’s success came from the hands and hearts of volunteers and professionals who gave of their time and talent.
The Nile Style Barbershop team—Kennard and William—shared how meaningful it was to give back:
“It is an honor for us to come and support the Kedrick Scribner Foundation Inc. at this community event. It fills our hearts with joy to use our skills to help those in need.”
Their commitment reflected the Foundation’s belief that simple acts—like a fresh haircut—restore dignity and confidence to children as they prepare for the new school year.
Michael Hill of DA FADE Mobile Barbershop added a touching testimony from the day:
“I praise The Kedrick Scribner Foundation Inc. for this great effort to help people. One parent told me she had borrowed money to get her son a haircut, but while in church at CRL Ministries, she heard about this free event and came instead. After I cut her son’s hair, she tried to pay me, but I told her it’s free—KSF and Jesus paid it all. I told her to keep the money for her son’s lunch at school. My heart was touched! God bless you, Kedrick.”
Moments like these highlighted not just service, but true compassion in action—where generosity and faith intersect to meet real needs.
Volunteer Kevin Wilson also expressed gratitude:
“God uses Kedrick to serve others. Sometimes we just need to see it in action from a role model, and that’s what this Foundation is. It inspires me to live with purpose and help others.”
Even vendors like Jerome Moore, now in his second year providing food, praised the mission:
“I see the joy on the kids’ faces. I see the barbers cutting with care. This is what it’s all about—community, love, and giving back.”
A Daughter’s Tribute: Love in Action Across Generations
Perhaps the most touching words came not from community leaders or volunteers, but from within the Scribner family itself. Kedria Scribner, daughter of Dr. Kedrick Scribner, spoke movingly about her father’s lifelong commitment to service:
“My father loves people. He’s always busy trying to help anyone he can, and I’ve seen firsthand the love he gives to all. He raised me as a single parent since I was just eight months old, and his love and care are ingrained in my heart and mind. Now, as a parent myself of two beautiful baby boys—one of whom received his free haircut today—I am inspired by the great work he continues to do for those in need. His example shapes the way I love and care for my own children.”
Her testimony reminded all present that the Foundation’s work is more than programs and events—it’s a legacy of love that spans generations, inspiring children, families, and communities alike.
Beyond Baltimore: A Global Mission
The Scribner family’s vision extends far beyond Maryland. Globally, the Kedrick Scribner Foundation operates the Widow’s Mite Program at the Kedrick Scribner Vocational Center in Lagos, Nigeria, where women are empowered through hands-on training in ICT, bead-making, and tailoring.
These skills not only provide a means of income but also restore dignity, allowing mothers and widows to support their families without reliance on handouts. Through this initiative, women gain the tools to secure employment or launch small businesses, breaking cycles of poverty and creating generational change.
The program has become a beacon of hope, demonstrating that with the right resources and compassion, communities can be transformed from the inside out.
Local supporters like Erica and Robert Talley underscored the importance of this dual mission:
“We love that KSF helps families here at home and across the world. They are changing lives in Baltimore and Nigeria alike. This is God’s work in action.”
